Bookmarking Life
I’m into books these days. Well, I’ve always liked books, but these days, I find myself reading a little more. And guess what? It’s not the story plots or thrilling twists that stick in my mind but it’s the act of bookmarking. Strange for a first thought, I know. But the more I think about it, the more I realize how beautifully the idea of bookmarking holds the essence of life.
Think about it. It’s such a simple thing, placing a cute little bookmark on the page when you’re pausing or leaving. Yet, it carries so much meaning. You’re not ending the book, just taking a break, saving your spot, and promising to come back.
And bookmarking isn’t just about books, is it? We all do it, whether we realize it or not. With physical books, it doesn’t even have to be a proper bookmark—a neatly cut rectangle of card or paper. It could be a pen cap, a chocolate wrapper, a grocery store receipt, or even a charger cable! Anything nearby that lets you say, “This is where I’ll continue from.” It’s such a small act, but it keeps things in order, helping you return without getting lost. And then there are digital bookmarks, which are part of our everyday lives. While browsing, when we stumble upon something useful or interesting, we immediately star it or save it as a bookmark. Because we know we might want to revisit it later, when we have the time, the mood, or the need.
I actually came across something interesting while casually browsing the internet. You know how it goes—you start reading one thing, click on a related link, and before you know it, you’re down a rabbit hole of trivia! Well, that’s how I ended up here. This is a fun fact! The first digital bookmarks made their appearance in 1993, with the launch of the Mosaic browser. Imagine that, a simple feature that changes the way we navigate the internet, allowing us to save pages and come back to them anytime we want.
Now, picture how this idea plays out in real life. You’re in the middle of a conversation with someone you like, and out of nowhere, they say something sweet about you—something that makes your heart swell. It’s the kind of moment you’d want to come back to, right? A memory worth bookmarking in your mind, to revisit whenever you need a little pick-me-up. And then, of course, there are those not-so-great moments. You know the ones, the situations that drain you, irritate you, or leave you feeling a little off. Wouldn’t it be great if you could just close that scene the way you close a book with a loud fap when you’re annoyed about the content? (Sadly, you can’t always close the person’s mouth in front of you, but maybe you can mentally bookmark the moment and figure out how to handle it later!)
Life, in so many ways, feels like reading a book. You can’t rush through it all at once. You pause, you reflect, you save the best moments, and you learn to turn the page when it’s time. Bookmarking isn’t just about holding your place but it’s about enjoying the journey, one moment at a time.
So here’s to the bookmarks we create every day—the physical ones, the digital ones, and the invisible ones we hold in our hearts. Because sometimes, it’s the tiny pauses, the little acts of saving moments, that make life’s bigger picture more meaningful. Whether it’s a heartfelt conversation, a quiet sunset, or a silly inside joke, life gives us so many moments to treasure. And, just like the bookmarks in our books, they remind us that while the chapters may change, we always have a place to come back to—a place that feels like home.
