ChatGPT: My New Frenemy!
"Hey, suggest me a project idea to try my hands-on python"
"I want a detailed recipe of Chocolate brownie without using eggs"
"Correct the below SQL query, it's throwing me an error"
"What can be the best place for recreation in December in India?"
"Which color dresses suit fair complexion?"
"Help me find compound interest, profit and loss for the below given problem"
These are some questions that I frequently ask ChatGPT (Now it definitely knows my areas of improvement and my weak points). I started using this chat bot from January 2023. Then, when it answered and solved all my 'queries' and 'worries' I was super relieved and happy! At that moment I just thanked God for such innovative and advanced technologies and minded my own business. Curious cat inside me had curled up in a blanket.
And now in late 2024, when I read(and been reading) some standard literature on innovations and evolutions about computers, I am stuck in the Memory and Stored Programs no matter what all other concepts I try to explore more. My mind always lingers here, because AI and all the chatbots work on this simple yet great logic!!! And this drove me towards the basics of Artificial Intelligence!
So, what is AI?
In simple terms, it is a program that is capable of performing tasks intelligently without being explicitly instructed (just like a topper kid of the class;)) It can also think and act rationally! This is something that traditional computer programs cannot do.
If you are thinking if AI can THINK for real, we have examples in front of us.
A self-driving car! This can operate without a human driver. Cameras, AI and sensors are all what it uses.
AI has this idea - There is a computer program that doesn't need to be told what to do all the time. In other words, it can learn.
How it learns?
The specific step of instructions that go into learning is a subfield of AI on its own called, Machine Learning. Now, what exactly is Machine learning? Machines that learn something? Partially true. This is a type or a branch of Artificial Intelligence that enables some set of programs or steps of instructions (called algorithms) to simplify hidden patterns within the provided data. AI can efficiently perform only with its all five branches. One is of course, Machine Learning. Others are Deep learning, Natural Language processing, Neural networks and Computer vision.
To know more about the background of our present Queen, the ChatGPT I had to carry out a little research. Now, I realize I could have just asked ChatGPT a simple question - "Who are you?" I could have definitely asked for a detailed introduction! Nvm I asked my old friend Google, who helped me in doing my home works when I was in school.
ChatGPT is a foundational model developed by OpenAI. GPT here refers to Generative Pre-Trained Transformer which is a neural network - one of the five branches of AI that I mentioned before. Neural networks are such programs that simulate the human brain and is trained on data sets.
And hey, what is OpenAI? It's nothing but a research company that is aiming to develop AI and they say that their aim is to develop something that "benefits all of humanity". Just like Unilever experimenting on Vaseline everyday. OpenAI can create images, comprehension texts and audio too, with Generative AI, commonly referred as GenAI.
GenAI has the lion share in OpenAI's 'intelligence' and 'efficiency'. It is a type of AI technology that can produce text, images, audio and more when prompted by a human using natural language. For example, if you prompt ChatGPT to "summarize Sarojini Naidu's "To India" poem in 300 words", it will provide a summary. It can comprehend, remember and store. It not only produces texts, tables and images but also allows users to input a variety of prompts such as images, videos, sound and 3D designs. GenAI evolves as it continues to train on more data. As how humans evolve after completion of every grade in school!
ChatGPT was free of cost in the initial days when it was designed. Later, OpenAI decided to charge users. Now, users get some limited number of questions for free and charges apply later based on the models. ChatGPT is a foundational model and now it has five or more versions/mini-models. Charges vary according to latest versions.
OpenAI continuously updates its large language models(LLMs) to improve their performance. As of October 2024, the company offers these models: GPT-4o (which is the primitive model and free for some limited questions), GPT-4o mini(Suggested by OpenAI as 'Faster for everyday tasks'), 01-preview and 01-mini, GPT-4 Turbo and GPT-3.5 Turbo. Last three not being available to users as of now.
As Unilever has other products than Vaseline, OpenAI also has a few. Other than ChatGPT, their products and releases include
- DALL-E 2: This platform analyzes descriptions and prompts of images that users want. Say, you can ask, "draw a lion in zentangle artform."
- Whisper: It is an automatic speech recognition tool that's trained on audio data in many languages so that it can transcribe and translate speech. Oh remember, you need not whisper but prompt an input in normal voice ;)
- Scholar: A program that supports researchers and students.
- Codex: Codex is like ChatGPT but for code. It is trained on tons of code in different programming languages to make developers and engineers life easy!
- OpenAI Gym: Nah! This is not designed to give free diet plans, weight loss recipes or fitness goals. Instead, this is a free, open-source Python toolkit that helps developers develop and test reinforcement learning algorithms.
- OpenAI API: Helps in building Apps.
Nowadays, I have been exploring ghostwriting and content writing to improve my skills. During a recent casual conversation with friends, one suggested I try freelance content writing to gain confidence. But then, another friend interrupted with a question that hit me hard: “Do you still expect humans to be writing content?!” At that moment, I was stunned. It was like a bolt of realization—ChatGPT, the very AI I admire, could also do my favorite task: creating content! The fear of competition instantly set in, much like how I used to feel during school days, wondering if a classmate would outscore me in exams or debates.
And yet, I can't help but imagine—what’s next? While ChatGPT can produce impressive content, I believe there’s something unique about human creativity that machines can’t replace. Maybe the answer lies in collaborating with AI rather than fearing it. AI has grown into a formidable competitor, while Wikipedia, like a wise grandmother, observes quietly with a knowing smile.
